Description:

Third impression of Thomas Nelson's illustrated edition (first published 1888). Taken from Darwin's journals while voyaging on the H.M.S. Beagle, these notes form a background for ideas he would later develop in On the Origin of Species, while also serving as an excellent travel narrative of his voyage around South America, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as the famous survey of the Galapagos Islands.

Freeman 68.

Condition

8vo, orig. blue cloth, gilt, bevelled boards, minor rubbing to joints. Some foxing to prelims and edge of text block. Very good. Inscription to endpaper dated 1892 from Arthur Greg to the British archaeologist Charles Dawson (1864-1916). Dawson claimed to have made a number of archaeological and palaeontological discoveries (including the Piltdown Man) which were later exposed as frauds. Dawson's name stamp to half-title. Also, later ownership stamp and signature of British arachnologist, David R. Nellist to flyleaf.
