Pin-tail Duck [Anas acuta]. Original hand-coloured engraving.
- Collection : Ken Smith
Description:
Original hand-coloured engraving, plate 129, depicting the Pin-tail Duck, now generally known as the Northern Pintail (Anas acuta). From Edward Donovan's celebrated The Natural History of British Birds, a ten-volume work published between 1794 and 1819. Donovan himself drew, engraved or etched, and supervised the colouring of the plates; the engraved lines are often quite lightly indicated, with much of the finished effect produced through watercolour and gouache.
