Sixth edition, with additions and corrections. Twelfth thousand. This is the second issue of the sixth edition (published in the same year as the first - the eleventh thousand). Freeman states that the second issue (twelfth thousand), is 'notably less common'. The 6th edition is regarded as the last and is extensively revised, with a new chapter, VII, inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart, and a Glossary, compiled by W.S. Dallas. The title is changed to 'The Origin of Species', and it is in the 6th edition that the word 'evolution' appears for the first time.
