Description:

Sixth edition, twenty-fourth thousand. The sixth edition first appeared in 1872 (eleventh thousand) and the final definitive text, as Darwin left it, was the 1876 issue (eighteenth thousand). The sixth edition is regarded as the last and is extensively revised, with a new chapter, VII, inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart, and a Glossary, compiled by W.S. Dallas. The title is changed to 'The Origin of Species', and it is in the 6th edition that the word 'evolution' appears for the first time.

Freeman 408.
