Sixth edition, thirty-seventh thousand. Incorrectly dated 1883 to title-page (= ?1889 - see Freeman). 32-page publisher's catalogue, dated 1888, at rear. The sixth edition first appeared in 1872 (eleventh thousand) and the final definitive text, as Darwin left it, was the 1876 issue (eighteenth thousand). The sixth edition is regarded as the last and is extensively revised, with a new chapter, VII, inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart, and a Glossary, compiled by W.S. Dallas. The title is changed to The Origin of Species, and it is in the 6th edition that the word 'evolution' appears for the first time.

Freeman 410/427.

8vo, orig. publisher's green cloth, spine gilt; some very minor wear to spine ends and corners; small light stain to top corner of rear board. Front hinge cracked, but firm. Owner's name to front endpaper (dated June 20 89). Minor foxing to rear endpaper. Faint splash mark to bottom edge of text block.
