1st edition. This volume was one the most successful of Gosse's popular books, and continued to be reprinted after his death. Two wood engravings are by Gosse, the rest were by Joseph Wolf; all illustrations were engraved by Whymper. A companion volume - the Second Series - was also published a year later in 1861.

8vo, orig. green cloth, blind-stamped ornamental and plain borders to both boards, gilt vignette of gorilla to front board, minor wear to head/foot of spine. Some light scattered foxing/spotting. A good copy.
