Introduction by A.F. Tschiffely. Stephen Lucas Bridges, (also known as Esteban Lucas Bridges) (1874-1949) was an Anglo-Argentine author, explorer, and rancher. He was the second son of an Anglican missionary Reverend Thomas Bridges (1842–98) who was based in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, ministering to the indigenous Yahgan and Ona peoples. Lucas helped his father build Estancia Harberton, a sheep ranch, on the coast of the Beagle Channel.
After fighting for the British during World War I, he married and moved to South Africa, where they developed a ranch, later returning to Argentina, where he died.
The Uttermost Part of the Earth, commences in the mid 19th century with Captain Robert Fitzroy and Charles Darwin’s encounter with the Yahgans, in Tierra del Fuego while voyaging on HMS Beagle. The main body of the work concerns Bridges family's experiences in Tierra del Fuego. The work is now considered an important record of South American travel and ethnography of Tierra Del Fuego.
