Description:

Text English, German and French translated from Dutch. Includes facsimiles of selected maps and text from the Latin edition of Joan Blaeu's 'Atlas Maior', 1665, the cartographical masterpiece of the Baroque period. Printed in Amsterdam, the original 11-volume Latin edition, contained 594 maps, covering Arctica, Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. Blaeu’s 'Atlas Maior' was a remarkable achievement and remains to this day one of history’s finest examples of mapmaking. This work is based on the National Library of Vienna’s complete, hand coloured copy. The introduction and texts, by Peter van der Krogt, discusses the historical and cultural context and significance of the atlas.
